Doc Rivers agreed Friday to a contract extension for five years to continue as coach of the Boston Celtics.
The general manager, Danny Ainge made the announcement two days after the Celtics were eliminated from the playoffs by the Miami Heat.
Rivers said after Wednesday's loss to be leaning toward returning to the team. His contract expired at the end of the season.
"I think Doc is the best coach in the league. So it's great for us," Ainge said Friday at the team facility. "I would not have another person as a coach that was not Doc."
Rivers has coached the Celtics for the past seven years. He won the NBA title in 2008 and lost the final in 2010 before the Los Angeles Lakers.
